Juneteenth marks an important moment in American history and the African American experience. The name combines "June" and "nineteenth," referring to June 19, 1865. On that day, Union troops led by General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and proclaimed that all enslaved African Americans were free.
The Emancipation Proclamation freed African Americans in rebelling states from as early as when it went into effect on January 1st, 1863. The Civil War ended in April of 1865, it still took a while for freedom to make its way to some rebelling states. Enslavers were aware of the implementation of the Emancipation Proclamation. But, it wasn’t until June 19th, 1865 that it was actually enforced with the Union Army.
